KINAGE

About Kinage

A relationship calculator and tree sketchpad that does its work in your browser.

What it does

Kinage finds the closest shared ancestor of two people, counts the generations on each side, and names the relationship: sibling, aunt, second cousin once removed and so on. It shows the route on a diagram and the working in words, so you can check it rather than trust it. The calculator takes the two counts directly, the tree builder works from a real family you enter, and the chart lays every pairing out in one grid.

Where the naming comes from

Cousin degree and removal follow the usual genealogical convention, described in the guide to counting them. Half relatives, adoptive, step and foster links, and in-laws are handled as the guides explain. Each term has its own page in the list of terms.

Limits

Shared DNA percentages are theoretical averages. Real people vary widely, so treat them as a guide to what is plausible, not a test. Table of consanguinity, civil law and canon law figures are given for reference only. Kinage is not legal advice, and marriage and inheritance rules differ between countries and states, so ask a qualified person where it matters. More in consanguinity and marriage law.

Wording is English. Other languages often have finer distinctions, such as separate words for maternal and paternal aunts, which Kinage does not yet draw.
