A family tree is personal data about real people, many of them alive and many not able to agree to be in it. Treat it with the same care you would give an address book.
What Kinage does with your tree
Kinage has no accounts and no server that stores trees. Your trees are saved in your browser's local storage on your own device, and are never uploaded. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The side effect is that the data lives only in that browser on that device. Clearing site data, private browsing, or switching browser makes it vanish.
Back up
Use the export buttons in the tree builder to save a JSON or GEDCOM file, and keep that file somewhere safe. To move a tree to another device, export it and import it there.
Sharing
- Strip out living people, or reduce them to a name and no dates, before sending a file.
- Remember that a GEDCOM file holds every note you wrote. Check the notes first.
- On a shared computer, remove your tree when you finish. The privacy page has a button that clears everything Kinage has stored.
Kinage itself is a small tool, not a vault. It does not encrypt what it stores, so anyone who can open your browser profile can read it.
For the file format, see GEDCOM explained.
